We get asked this a lot. Acetyl hexapeptide-8—usually listed as Argireline—is a synthetic peptide used in many anti-aging creams and serums. It’s mainly there for expression lines.
So what does it actually do?
It helps relax the small facial muscles that cause expression wrinkles. The mechanism is similar to Botox, but topical and much milder. It interferes with acetylcholine release, which can soften forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. That’s why it’s sometimes called “Botox in a bottle.” It won’t replace injections, though. It just takes the edge off.
The clinical data isn’t bad, either. In one study, a 10% acetyl hexapeptide-8 emulsion reduced wrinkle depth by about 20% after 15 days and about 30% after 30 days. Another trial found nearly half of participants using a 10% hexapeptide formula saw visible improvement. In the placebo group, none did. Other research reported a 13% reduction in nasolabial folds and an 11% reduction in crow’s feet after 8 weeks.
Results depend on concentration, delivery system, and how long the product is used. In real formulas, it’s often paired with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and other peptides. You won’t see much from a tiny amount in a rinse-off product.
For formulators, acetyl hexapeptide-8 is easy to work with. It’s water-soluble, stable in many common systems, and generally well tolerated. It fits anti-aging serums, eye creams, face creams, and lotions.
It also supports collagen and elastin production, which can improve firmness and elasticity over time. Some studies suggest it helps protect the skin barrier and calm inflammation, so it can work in formulas for sensitive or aging skin.
