Short Description:

Ergothionine (mercaptohistidine trimethyl inner salt, EGT) is a compound discovered in 1909. It was first found in a fungus Claviceps purpurea. The pure product is white crystal, water-soluble (soluble at room temperature of 0.9 mol/L), and will not oxidize itself under physiological pH and strong alkaline solution. It has two isomers, namely thiol and thione, as shown in the right figure.
